Discovering the Artisan

Patrizia Italiano

Sicilia, Italy | Ceramist

Editor's Picks

Creativity and culture are the lifeblood of our society, a precious legacy to be passed on to new generations, nourishment of beauty and joy

Patrizia Italiano started working again after a long period of inactivity with new collections of sculptures, heads, plates and vases telling about Sicily in an ironic and contemporary way. Each object is made by hand, without the aid of molds or presses. Patrizia works and models each piece with different techniques and different types of clays. All the ceramics are fired at high heat with glazes and engobes or crystals that she personally composes. The "Venditori di Sicilia" collection was born out of her love for her city, Palermo, with its markets, its smells, and its foods steeped in centuries of culture and history. Her works play ironically on Sicilian tradition while respecting its cultural heritage. This collection renew the tradition of Sicilian heads, but with a contemporary design where she removes, giving importance to naïve expressiveness with references to the characters that represent Italian-ness."Mediterranea," was born out of her second love: the island of Filicudi where she has her heart; with the sea, the red earth and the blue declined in so many ways. "Scapiddate," on the other hand, tells of women against the tide, hair in the air but feet firmly planted on the ground. The "Stokers" tell of the beauty of fire and the passion that animates life.

She was selected among the world's most interesting artisans featured in the Homo Faber guide, by the Michelangelo Foundation. She also works together with a small association of artists and artisans who, like her, had been inactive for several years, making room for more ethically and socially responsible and sustainable professional figures and initiatives.
