In the ancient Sassi of Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site inhabited since the Paleolithic, Vetera Matera has opened as a five-star albergo diffuso affiliated with Relais & Châteaux. The result of nearly eight years of meticulous restoration, it turns a portion of the city's extraordinary cave architecture into a place of rare intensity — where every design decision grows from a deep respect for the rock, the landscape, and the memory of those who once lived there.

Some places resist the ordinary language of hospitality, and Matera is one of them. Opened in 2025 in the Sasso Barisano district after nearly eight years of scrupulous restoration, Vetera Matera is a five-star albergo diffuso affiliated with Relais & Châteaux, set within the Sassi di Matera — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993, and a stage for human life since the Paleolithic.

The architecture is inseparable from its setting. Spread across several buildings dating from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century, the property comprises 23 rooms, including 8 suites, connected by small courtyards and stone stairways. Some are underground suites that burrow into the rock across multiple levels, a few with private indoor pools; others are light-filled rooms in the higher parts of the complex, with terraces overlooking the Sassi. Throughout, essential furnishings and stone-clad bathrooms let the calming energy of the rock take center stage.

The rest of the property follows the same logic. The Elysium Spa unfolds entirely underground, with a calidarium and frigidarium carved into the rock. The Artema restaurant, in a grand hypogeal hall, is led by Executive Chef Eduardo Estatico, whose contemporary southern Italian cooking brings his Neapolitan roots into dialogue with Lucania. Above, a panoramic terrace bar catches the setting sun; below, a theatrical cellar descends into the heart of the Sassi for tastings.

To stay at Vetera Matera is to sleep inside history itself. Within walls that human hands shaped over centuries, in the quiet embrace of stone that has sheltered life since the dawn of humankind. Here, luxury is not something added but something uncovered: a matter of light falling across ancient rock, of silence, of the deep and grounding sense of being somewhere entirely singular.
