Renzo Serafini, renowned Italian artisan and founder of his eponymous studio, transforms light into experiences. Drawing inspiration from instinct, artistry, and centuries-old craftsmanship, Serafini creates hand-crafted lamps that are emotive presences, shaping how we inhabit and feel our surroundings. In this conversation, he shares his creative process, the importance of artisan techniques, and the transformative power of light.

Well-known for his impeccable taste and talent, Renzo Serafini is an Italian artist specialized in handcrafting lamps and light fixtures according to time-old artisan traditions. He founded his namesake studio and production company in 2011, where he transforms light for indoor and outdoor decors, helping people discover and fall in love with light.

Light is at the heart of your work: how does a lamp come to life, and what emotions guide your creative process?
My creative process is guided primarily by instinct. Often, the idea for a lamp emerges while I am observing or experiencing something completely unrelated to light. I let myself be inspired by other artistic languages—forms, materials, or sensations from entirely different worlds—and suddenly, the object takes shape in my mind.
It feels as if the lamp already exists, carrying its own life. I can sense its presence, character, and identity even before I begin crafting it. I rarely start by imagining an entire collection; instead, I focus on a single piece, aiming to give it a fully realized and autonomous personality. Intuition guides the process, and only afterward does the lamp find its dialogue with the space it will inhabit.
The work unfolds in a very intimate, introspective way. Almost never do I begin with sketches; I start by experimenting directly with materials and forms, until the vision I imagined becomes tangible.

You work using traditional artisan techniques: why is it important to preserve them in contemporary lighting design?
Artisan techniques preserve knowledge that cannot be replaced by industrial production. They are the result of gestures passed down over time and a deep connection between hand, material, and aesthetic sensibility. Preserving them keeps alive a culture of making that allows for the creation of unique objects—each telling its own story and establishing an authentic dialogue with the spaces they occupy.
In contemporary lighting design, this approach allows us to move beyond standardization and create bespoke solutions. Artisanship represents the freedom to pursue diverse creative paths: on one hand, the instinctive, artistic birth of a product; on the other, a more structured, design-focused approach that responds to the specific needs of a space. This duality allows for tailor-made creations, designed to fit unique environments, clients, or experiences—much like a custom-fitted garment.
Every piece is one-of-a-kind because it bears the mark of the artisan’s hand. An invisible thread follows the object’s journey, revealing the time, care, and process involved in its creation. This human touch is the true value of the creative process—one I am unwilling to compromise.

How can light transform not only a space but also the way we experience it in daily life?
Light has the power to change how a space is perceived and how it is inhabited. It can make an environment feel more intimate and cozy or more open and dynamic.
When I work on a specific project, the creative process evolves in close dialogue with the space itself. The lighting arises from listening—understanding the room’s function and the needs of those who will live in it.
Take a restaurant, for example: the first impression often comes from light. It shapes anticipation, guides emotions, and accompanies the memory of the experience. Lighting contributes to a space’s identity and overall coherence. Good illumination does more than make a room visible; it fosters a deeper, more conscious relationship with the environment, creating spaces that are welcoming, harmonious, and profoundly personal.
