Since founding her design studio, Sella Concept, in 2016, the French-German designer Tatjana von Stein has become known globally for her passionate and evocative design. She infuses her theatrical aesthetic into her projects and this year, she debuted her deluxe furniture collection called Mise en Scène under her name.

What’s your ritual to get yourself into the holiday spirit?

First comes autumn, then comes cashmere, long woolen coats, warm socks and red wine, within a minute the spirit of Christmas comes alive. Christmas music goes a long way of course, but to me it only really takes a roaring fireplace to feel that the holiday season is just around the corner.

What’s your most cherished holiday tradition?

Family and close friends are therefore my most cherished holiday tradition. There is a psychological effect to the holidays where everyone feels we must say goodbye to each other before the holidays, even if you only take a week off!

How will your holiday tabletop look like this year?

As we come together in our family home, the house really feels like home alone exploded in it. I am a contemporary designer with a distinct nod to the past, but when it comes to Christmas I am as traditional as it gets. Reds, greens, golds, wooden nutcrackers, bowls of nuts and open backgammon boards, I am all in. My tabletop is passed down from generations, white tablecloth, porcelain ice skater figurines, red candles and an ongoing smell of clementine peels.

When picking the perfect gift what do you look for?

I am often late to the game, but I look for uniqueness, personalization and a gift that lasts over time. Filler gifts are allowed for stockings… the main gift must be with intent.
