Objects made by artisans have a certain hand that machine made products simply cannot replicate. Aside from a higher level of quality, pieces made by craftsmen (and craftswomen) somehow exude the pride of work that goes into them. I also love that each piece is unique in some way.
What does Made in Italy mean to you?
To me, “Made in Italy” is synonymous with quality and artistry. I think of decorative arts that have been thoughtfully designed with aesthetics in mind. Italian designs are generally cutting edge despite being from a people so rooted in tradition. I love that balance
Who has inspired your work and style?
It’s impossible for me to pinpoint one person or thing that inspired my style. Being in love with design since I can remember, it’s truly a culmination of my whole life experience. I definitely have a big European sensibility in my designs. I adore the way that French and Italian people in particular keep collecting pieces for generations to create spaces that truly tell the story of the people that live in them… and they do it so effortlessly! It’s just innate. That easy mix of old and new is what inspires me to create homes that feel collected and timeless. Of course I also have to credit my mother. Even though our styles are very different, she taught me not to worry about what other people are doing or what’s trending, but to “stay in my own lane,” listen to my own instincts, and no matter what I end up doing, commit to it and don’t do anything half way!
Design Approach and Philosophy
My goal is to happily surprise my clients by giving them what they want but on a level of sophistication and luxury they never imagined before… No matter who they are. I’m interested in all periods of design and decoration, believing that a mix of styles is what makes a room chic and comfortable. A home should reflect the people who live there and respect the context of the given architecture, with rooms that are fresh and tastefully put together as opposed to "decorated." I love to propose the unexpected, I tend to obsess over paint colors, and I adore couture-like detailing that may go unnoticed by anyone except the owner or the occasional visitor with a discerning eye. These things are what make the designs I do for my clients truly custom. No two projects are ever alike
What is the one element of design you can’t live without?
Artwork! Artwork is what really customizes a home and it says so much about the occupants. Whether it’s a de Kooning, a Renaissance masterpiece, or something your kid did in a nice frame, putting art that you love around your home is essential and brings every room to life.
What is in your opinion the ultimate luxury?
Ironed sheets on a freshly made bed every night would be the ultimate luxury for me. It makes me sigh to think about it!
