I’m a committed advocate of craft. One of the things that makes David Collins Studio unique is our long-held belief in the importance of supporting artisanship - while also encouraging design innovation –discovering traditional crafts that can be reinvented and woven into the complex narratives of TheStudio’s projects.
I find inspiration from everyday observation; keeping my eyes open to what is round me, during my extensive travels. I am also hugely inspired by the mid-century movements, especially Sornay at the moment. Each project comes with its own brief, challenges and requirements for exploring new places for inspiration. Ceramics, art, fashion, theatre, all have their place. The location of a project, the history, architecture, culture and craft all play a part in the process.
Describe your design approach and philosophy.
I am a passionate believer in the idea of creating luxury through quality, and would say I’m obsessed with the quality and vision of our work and remain firmly committed to the belief that it’s the clarity of our ideas that ensures the longevity of our designs.’
I couldn't live without blacking pencils, to sketch my ideas. They are the only way I can communicate my vision, that and Dedar fabrics, which feature in all our projects. They are very special.
What is your idea of the ‘ultimate luxury”?
Ultimate luxury is having a designed space which for you, works perfectly. The comforts, the lighting, the balance, the contrast, the smell. When all things are right, that feels like ultimate luxury. It's very hard to perfect on paper, and a space needs to be lived in, shopped in, dined in and fine-tuned to create the balance of ultimate luxury.
