A Silent Retreat: Sighé, Apulia

Discover Sighé, a countryside retreat located in the southern tip of the region of Apulia. Inspired by the philosophy of rebirth and the ancient Greek word for silence, Sighé is a place to enjoy slow life surrounded by artisanal furnishings and sophisticated design in an earthy color palette.

Apulia is an intriguing region of Southern Italy. Located at the tip of the Italian boot, where sun-soaked beaches, fields of olives, and cuisine come together for an overwhelming sensory experience, Apulia is a popular getaway for locals and travelers.

Nestled among olive groves, in the medieval hamlet of Alessano in Apulia, Sighé is an authentic 17th century farmhouse locally called a Masseria. The restoration of this historical countryside house has been done with a lot of care, love, and attention to details and to the authentic structure of the building. Founded on the philosophy of silence, rebirth, and renewed prospects, guests can soak themselves in the calmness and serenity that fill the indoor and outdoor spaces of this beautiful retreat.

Sighé gets its name from the ancient Greek word for silence- as every aspect of the villa: from the softness of the lime to the flow of water reflects a sense of peace and harmony. The character of this Mediterranean villa links to the spirituality of the local monastery, the most Eastern in Italy.

Everything here is essential: without frills as it can be seen from the neutral tones and clean décor. The interior spaces of Sighé have been curated suing materials such as Opus Signinum, tuff, marble, and wood all strictly sourced locally from surrounding quarries.

The villa consists of an airy and spacious living area, a sublime family bedroom with a plush bed, and a well-equipped modern kitchen. A decadent jacuzzi in the bedroom adds an indulgent edge for those who wish to relax indoors. An arched glass door in the living room opens up to a sun-kissed stone terrace with a picturesque alfresco dining area. A large heated plunge pool and double sun-loungers not only adorn the terrace but offers a great possibility to unwind at sunset. Altogether, the terrace is such a spot where guests experience the best moments of the holiday in complete privacy.

Inside, the villa has been revamped breathing new life into the rural building. An earthy color palette gives it the spaces a minimalist style, while its detailing and artisanal furnishings add to its sophisticated design. The whitewashed walls with exposed natural Pietra leccese stone, exude a warm rustic charm as well as the traditional ornaments such as the ceramic pumi (acorn-shaped ornaments native to the region) and crockery by ceramicists from Grottaglie and Vietri that can be found throughout the living room and kitchen. Beautiful chairs with woven backs in marine ropes, designed by Emilio Nanni for Billiani 1911, and classic green "Vetro di Empoli" flasks fuse the ancient Italian tradition and modern sensibility.
