The glaze for this vase is made with crushed lava rocks collected on Mt Nyiragongo in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Mt Nyiragongo is an active stratovolcano in the Virunga mountains and the biggest lava lake in the world. Its lava, made of nephelinite, is unusually fluid because of the high contents of iron and magnesium and under saturation of silica. It flows downhill at speeds of up to 100 km/h. The body of the vessels is made of stoneware and turned at the wheel.
