Paola Staccioli

Thistle Ceramic Plate

This plate was thrown on a potter's wheel, fired for the first time at 1040 °C (1900 °F), painted, sprayed with crystalline glaze and fired a second time at 940 °C (1720 °F). The second firing is longer in order to trigger a smoking process that makes the blue particularly iridescent, while the stems, painted with copper oxide, remain in their rather-light shade of green. The overall effect is delicate yet brilliant.
