How did you first become involved in the world of design? Tell us your story.
I started out working for an amazing clothing designer, Victor Alfaro and then I forayed into interior design. An ex-boyfriend of mine knew that I wanted to get into interior design and he convinced his business partner to hire me to do his apt. It all snowballed from there and before I knew it I was in business! Growing up, I was always very into interiors and fascinated by how different spaces and the energy of a room can affect one's mood.
How would you describe your personal style and what’s the personal signature that makes your project unique?
I would describe my personal style as modern eclectic. I think what makes my style unique is how I mix mid-century modern, art deco and french antiques, alongside of custom furnishings to create spaces that are luxurious, yet super comfortable.
Are there any specific trends that you’re currently blending in your practice?
Currently our favorite trend at Michelle Gerson Interior Design is to use a variety of hand painted wallcoverings, from Gracie to Degournay to MJ Atelier and of course Porter Teleo.
Where do you draw inspiration for your projects?
I am inspired in so many different ways. Mostly, I draw inspiration for my projects from travel, museum visits, looking through old issues of design magazines and, of course, social media.
What is the decorative piece you enjoy selecting for your clients and why?
My favorite piece to select for clients is special lighting. I love selecting chandeliers, sconces and lamps.
What is your favorite project you have worked on and why?
My favorite project I have worked on to date happens to be my latest oceanfront project in Palm Beach. The client has the best taste, and because this is our third project together, the rythm and the level of trust makes it fun and easy to pick out special pieces.
What do you think is going to be the next big trend in interior design?
We’ve been seeing a lot of organic modern trends in interiors these days. I think new trends are leaning towards more artful, handcrafted and colorful items.
Do you have an interior design master that you look up to?
The interior design masters that I adore and am inspired by are Joseph Dirande, Peter Marino, Kelly Wearstler and Jean Louis Deniot.
