Discover Villa Necchi Campiglio, a sanctuary of art and design in the heart of Milan. Dating back to the 30s the historic residence is surrounded by a peaceful garden and houses stunning Art Deco furniture and decòr.
Villa Necchi Campiglio is one of Milan’s most iconic locations, nestled in a lush garden yet not far from the city’s fashion district. House of sensational works of art, sculptures and design pieces, the residence has a long history that starts back in the 30s when Angelo Campiglio and Gigina Necchi decided to build a country-style Villa right in the city. The work was entrusted to Piero Portaluppi, one of the greatest Italian architects of the period, who decided to design the house as an ode to rationalist architecture.
The building, nestled into an enchanted garden with a tennis court and a pool, is characterized by linear proportions and a stately presence, that speaks of luxury and elegance. Reflecting the Milanese lifestyle and the modern trends of the time, Villa Necchi Campiglio finds in its gardens its real crown jewel: colorful flowers flock to the green paths, inebriating the visitors with fresh flavors, while the sound of water and birdsong create a countryside atmosphere.
Portaluppi’s futuristic approach to architecture made Villa Necchi one of the first examples of technological vanguard, complete with industrial materials, electricity and even a heated swimming pool. The design of the house represented a radical break from the canonical shapes of upper-class Milanese apartments, featuring a minimal style characterized by unusual shapes and a search for opening on the exterior environment to welcome the natural light.

The house interiors are characterized by a curious synthesis of elements from Rationalism, Art Deco and Viennese style conceived as a total, an indissoluble work of art that has come to our day following several transformations and influences. Many artworks coming from iconic collections decorate the elegant rooms of Villa Necchi Campiglio: damask walls, golden decorations, marbles and wood carvings perfectly frame examples of Italian and international art such as Tiepolo, Canaletto, De Chirico, Picasso, Fontana, Modigliani and Matisse.

While the first floor served as a prestigious reception area, with the magnificent veranda overlooking the greenery, the upper floor played host to the bedrooms. These spaces were conceived for people who were hard-working but also capable of savoring their free time in the company of guests and friends, even in ways that were rather unconventional for that period – this explains the presence of the screening room and the gymnasium. Here, innovation was translated into both comfort and efficiency, as evinced by the lifts, dumbwaiters, internal intercoms, sliding doors and walled cellars. All of these luxurious, modern features made the villa one of the iconic residences of the period.
The villa is today open to all, thus respecting the wishes of the old owners, who in 2001 entrusted the residence to FAI - Fondo Ambiente Italiano - with the promise that it would be transformed into a place to enjoy and to visit, thanks also to the delightful garden, the numerous scheduled events and the stylish bistro concealed within the grounds.
