Active since the 1970s, Claudio Carrieri is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans painting, photography, sculpture, and performance. Renowned for his mastery of ceramics, bronze, fiberglass, and steel, he blends innovation with a deep engagement in social and cultural themes. His installations, in iconic sites like the Priamar Fortress and Capri’s Augustan Gardens, transform public spaces into uniquely thought-provoking environments. Carrieri collaborates with galleries, institutions, and schools, crafting art that inspires reflection and fosters civic dialogue.
Beautiful is what is represented through good gesture, good is quality agreed upon in the civil debate in which art must participate by taking sides. This today is the formal genesis of beauty
Modelled in semi-refractory ceramic, fired at 1100°C, Claudio Carrieri's sculptures have the form of a story, the one evoked by a gesture performed with artisanal naturalness. The decoration is therefore calligraphy, the written form of the inaudible voice of that gesture that gradually comes to light and takes on appearance.
The clay strings become historiated skin. In reality, the ‘Osmunde’, with their material appearance of rough fired earth, are modelled on the edge of emptiness, they are imprints of absence.
The assonances with certain forms that belong to a very distant past, as far back as the Upper Palaeolithic, are due more to a sort of morphic redundancy than to a design of the intellect, which the author believes manifests itself when action is supported by a codified instinct, which unites us all, from the Stone Age to the present day, as men.
By repeating the primary act, origin and end are intertwined in a litany of doing that rises, like a prayer, from the bottom towards an oscillating sidereal pole.
This circular-utological movement of the gesture around a hollow centre indicates a cosmic, mythological reference: a feminine axis that rises from the earth towards infinity; the narration finds coincidence with the form. As in a three-dimensional ‘Mandala’, a contemporary temple is represented here.
