Rometti

Umbria, Italy | Ceramist

Editor's Picks

Art is not a job but a need, Beauty is a privilege and needs nourishment, every day.

Ceramiche Rometti was born in 1927 in Umbertide, from the intuition of the skilled ceramist Settimio Rometti, who resorted to the collaboration of his nephews, Aspromonte Rometti and Dante Baldelli. In a climate of cultural ferment such as that of the avant-garde movements of the early 20th century, the dream to be realized had a precise and ambitious form: Rometti would become the synthesis of art, craftsmanship and industrial production, a new way of reading expressiveness and exalting the potential of ceramics.
Freeing themselves from all formal constraints, the artists experiment with sculpted figures, vases, lamps, plates, graffiti pieces and limited edition paintings that make uniqueness their strength. Rometti's style is the eclectic and timeless fruit of an artisanal and artistic practice in which cues from the European avant-garde merge with an emotional attachment to the Umbrian territory and its traditions. This fortunate union enhances the techniques and materials guarded by local artisans: natural clay drawn from quarries bathed by the Tiber River, hand molding by lathe, objects engobed with a special plaster that emphasizes the depth of colors and decorations, are part of the recipe for uniqueness that has made Rometti pieces among the most coveted by collectors worldwide.
With the arrival of Massimo Monini, a patron and entrepreneur of the arts, and Jean-Christophe Clair, a multifaceted and visionary art director, Rometti began a new and prosperous phase in 2012, which is still ongoing. The extraordinary ability of the two manager-artists lies in finding a perfect balance between a contemporary vision and the enhancement of Rometti's heritage. The Manifattura boasts prestigious collaborations with brands and artists who have chosen its uniqueness to produce exclusive pieces and collections. Poltrona Frau, Roche Bobois, Fresh and many other major brands, international design names such as Kenzo Takada, Chantal Thomass, Roberto Capucci: a constellation that shapes the past and present history of the iconic Rometti brand, fueling the race to collect pieces that have embellished nearly a century of art.
