Piumati: Living Legacy of Murano Glassmaking

Rooted in the heart of Murano, Piumati carries forward the island’s centuries-old glassmaking tradition through the work of twenty master artisans. Named after the historic piumati technique—a delicate feathered pattern created by combing hot glass threads—the brand transforms ancient craftsmanship into contemporary chandeliers of striking originality. With each piece certified Vetro Artistico® Murano and drawn by hand before being brought to life in the furnace, Piumati blends heritage, artistry, and bespoke design into luminous works of art.

Based in Murano, Piumati relies on a team of twenty master craftsmen to create its splendid chandeliers. The company takes its name from a 17th-century Murano glass technique for feather patterns - hence “piumati” - obtained by applying hot glass threads in contrasting tones to blown glass that is subsequently combed up and down. Boasting the “Vetro Artistico® Murano” certification, each chandelier is a singular objet d’art conceived by brilliant designers and drawn on stone blackboards before taking shape under the expert touch of master artisans.

Murano has been synonymous with glassmaking artistry for centuries—a symbol of Italian craftsmanship and a reference point in luxury design. How does the island’s history and identity influence Piumati’s philosophy and the design of your creations?

Piumati is deeply rooted in Murano—its traditions, history, and identity. Not only is our historic furnace located at the very heart of the island, but every one of our creations is born from the soul of this land of fire and sand.

Our master glassmakers are sons of Murano. Raised in the glow of its blazing furnaces, they carry in their blood the knowledge and passion that have made the island the global benchmark for artistic glass for centuries. Murano is not merely a place of production—it is our language, our essence, and our signature.

Each piece is handcrafted, blending ancient Muranese techniques with a contemporary vision to create designs that are both innovative and refined. Through this process, we carry forward the island’s legendary traditions—evolving them without ever compromising their spirit.

The defining qualities that made Murano glass world-renowned—elegance, sophistication, and uniqueness—are fully expressed in our custom creations, each shaped to meet the distinct needs of even the most ambitious interior projects.

Every Piumati creation is one-of-a-kind, handmade by skilled glassmasters using techniques passed down through generations. What does the process of creating a custom chandelier look like—from concept to completion?

Our creative process is a daily ritual, deeply rooted in Muranese tradition. Each morning at the Piumati furnace, twenty artisans gather around the glowing furnace mouths—just as has been done on the island for centuries—to plan the work ahead.

At our four workstations, our master glassmakers—all Muranese and true custodians of this ancient craft—sketch the outlines of the chandeliers by hand on stone boards. These forms bring to life the bold, original designs developed by our creative team—pieces that merge the timeless identity of Murano with the specific vision and needs of each client.

The entire process is manual: the glass is blown and shaped using traditional Muranese methods, elevated by the expertise of our four lead Masters under the direction of Marco Seguso, the eighth generation of one of Murano’s most storied glassmaking families.

Thanks to the flexibility and artistry of our team, each chandelier is a bespoke masterpiece—where centuries of tradition meet modern innovation and customization, tailored to the most refined interior concepts.

The Muranese glass technique known as "piumati" not only gives your brand its name but plays a central role in your work. Can you explain this technique in more detail?

The “piumati” technique is the very heart of our identity. It’s from this refined, historic process that our brand takes both its name and deepest inspiration.

Originating in the 17th century right here in Murano, the “piumati” technique involves the hot application of fine, colored glass threads onto a hand-blown glass surface. With skill passed down over generations, our artisans carefully comb these threads upward and downward, creating a fluid, feather-like pattern that evokes movement and lightness.

The result is a vibrant, tactile surface that captures and refracts light in exceptional, nuanced ways.

At Piumati, this isn’t just a tribute to the past—it’s a living art form. We bring this technique into the present with a contemporary design language, allowing Murano’s legacy to evolve while staying true to its authentic soul. Our creations continue to reflect the brilliance of this heritage—reimagined through new forms, yet forever grounded in tradition.
