The Enduring Legacy of Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand

Sixty years ago, Cassina embarked on a bold journey that would forever transform the landscape of modern furniture. With profound respect for the vision of Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand, the Italian company reissued their pioneering designs, uniting modernist ideals with the precision and warmth of Italian craftsmanship. What began in Meda in 1965 as a daring act of industrial interpretation has since become a living legacy, a collection that continues to evolve through research, innovation and devotion to the original spirit of creation.

In the heart of Lombardy, where craftsmanship and industry coexist in delicate balance, a quiet revolution began in 1965. Cassina, then a family-run company rooted in artisanal tradition, made a bold and visionary decision: to bring the designs of Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand into industrial production. The idea was radical for its time — to reinterpret handcrafted, architecturally conceived furnishings as serially produced pieces, without compromising their artistic essence.

Cassina’s pioneering intuition to manufacture the Le Corbusier®, Pierre Jeanneret®, Charlotte Perriand® Collection 60 years ago defined the paradigm of modern furniture design.

These designs, first unveiled in 1929 at L’Équipement intérieur d’une habitation during the Salon d’Automne in Paris, had redefined what a modern home could be. Their clarity of form, purity of line, and embrace of new materials embodied the optimism of a new era. Cassina’s insight lay in understanding that these objects were not relics of a bygone avant-garde, but living expressions of design as a universal language — one that could still speak to the needs and aspirations of contemporary life.

Through painstaking research, Cassina’s Research and Development department examined the original drawings and prototypes, decoding their structural logic and ergonomic intent. Collaborating with historians, engineers, and the designers’ heirs, the company reimagined these pieces for modern production, introducing technological innovations while safeguarding their authenticity. What emerged was not replication, but rebirth — an industrial process imbued with the soul of craftsmanship.

As the collection grew, Cassina deepened its collaboration with the Le Corbusier Foundation and the heirs of Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Jeanneret, introducing new materials, finishes, and sustainable innovations. Yet each piece preserved its original essence — the disciplined proportions, harmonious balance of structure and comfort, and the humanist vision of the Modern Movement.

For Cassina, this 60-year milestone is more than an anniversary; it is a reflection of identity. Founded in Meda in 1927, the company has long united cutting-edge technology with the poetic sensibility of Italian design. Under The Cassina Perspective, heritage icons and contemporary creations continue to shape a coherent, human-centered vision of living.
