International Klein Blue changed the art world in 1957 when its creator, French artist Yves Klein, and a chemist were finally successful in creating an ultramarine blue paint that did justice to the pigment. Nowadays, this iconic color has gained popularity in interior design, especially for pieces used in spaces that require a pop of color or directly on walls to accentuate peculiar structural elements. Yves Klein was a precursor to what later became Body Art and possessed an intense passion for monochrome. In fact, some of his most renowned pieces are simple canvases painted in a single, solid shade. However, blue became his distinctive hue when he embarked on a mission to create a paint that wouldn't diminish the brilliance of the ultramarine blue pigment. In collaboration with the owner of a Parisian paint factory, in 1957 he finally succeeded, creating what the world now knows as International Klein Blue. The paint's composition was patented, and the artist utilized it for various works, including, naturally, monochrome canvases.
In contemporary interior design, this blue hue has gained prominence as recent trends emphasize vibrant splashes of color in living spaces. Klein Blue, along with similar tones, can produce captivating effects based on its surroundings. It makes a bold statement with its textured surface in tiles by La Scala Milano Wallcovering or delivers significant impact in a timeless combination with white especially when paired with the right shade, as seen in tiles by Ma.Vi Ceramica. Another approach utilizes this vivid shade to craft intriguing shapes, as demonstrated by Gebrüder Thonet Vienna GmbH (GTV) – Wiener GTV Design, or adds a burst of color to clear objects, as seen in glasses by Casarialto.
