Albore Design

Lighting Maker - Lombardia, Italy

Named after the Italian meaning “the first light of dawn”, alluding to new beginnings, Albore specializes in digital manufacturing and innovative craftsmanship. The brainchild of designers Jacopo Mandarino and Mirko Maletta, its production reveals an authentic commitment to sustainability by using materials made of PLA - 100% organic bioplastic obtained from natural-origin sugars - using the Fused Deposition Modeling special 3D-printing technology. A careful manual refining process and a clever interlocking assembly ensure each piece is unique and glue-free.

We tell design stories in a different, sustainable way

The term 'Albore' in Italian literally means 'the first light of dawn' and was chosen because in addition to highlighting the Italian character of the brand, it conveys a clear and positive concept such as the beginning of a new day.
Albore wants to write a new story, to start a new day, to show that it is possible to improve by presenting its sustainable design, made 'simply' differently.

All Albore design products are made in Italy and are produced through a mix of digital manufacturing and innovative craftsmanship. Thanks to the rapid production of 3D printing, the company is able to produce on-demand what is needed, when it is needed, and most importantly tailored to each client.
The 3D printing technology it uses is called 'Fused Deposition Modeling' or more simply 'FDM,' and it builds models through fused deposition of filament. It mainly uses PLA (Polylactic Acid) which is a 100% compostable bioplastic derived from naturally occurring sugars such as corn starch.
For the parts of the lamps through which light passes and the colored parts, there is a long and meticulous process of sanding and finishing that leads precisely to painting with water-based colors.

Some of Albore's items, on the other hand, are made with all-natural bio-composite filaments, which do not involve any varnishing, but careful manual post-printing finishing.
These are filaments containing: 50% PLA and 50% wood particles, which give the final product a different natural color appearance depending on the type of plant they come from. Now we have available: ebony (black), pine (beige), birch (cream) and willow (yellow).
Other type of natural filament, made from 50 percent stone powder and PLA for the other 50 percent, gives products a look similar to real stone and a rough, matte finish on the surface. One example is the 'Athena' lamp, made entirely from this filament made from cement powder.

Albore makes each of its lamps from initial inspirational sketches, through 3D modeling and rapid prototyping, to final on-demand production with associated finishing and final assembly. The parts of each lamp are assembled using specially designed joints and threads for each project to avoid the use of glues and to allow easy assembly and disassembly.
