Piccoli Smalti

Artist - Lombardia, Italy

Giovanna Ferrero Ventimiglia, a trained architect with a background in painting, began experimenting with the cloisonné technique four years ago. Since then, she’s dedicated herself to crafting small slabs tenderly named "piccoli smalti", or small enamels. These precious little tiles - fashioned of silver, bronze, or brass - stand out for their distinctive abstract designs and dazzling hues emerging from a material with a rich history. Ventimiglia followed in her grandfather's footsteps in choosing a path dedicated to art and collaboration with Florentine artisans.

Piccoli Smalti combines an ancient cloisonné technique with contemporary design to create timeless pieces, adding a touch of sophistication, vibrancy and femininity to any space

Piccoli Smalti, a collection created by the Italian artist Giovanna Ferrero Ventimiglia, are unique pieces of art that embody elegance and femininity. The collection features transparent enamel colors applied using the cloisonné technique, resulting in a beautiful and delicate finish.

Paired with bases made of parchment, marble, stone, wood, bronze, or brass, the smalti are versatile pieces, perfectly complementingboth traditional and modern settings. Unique and numbered, they add a touch of sophistication and charm to any space.

The cloisonné technique used to create the smalti is an ancient art form dating back to ancient Egypt and developed by different civilizations, reaching its peak in the 12th century in Byzantium. It involves creating compartments or "cloisons" using fine wires or strips of metal, which are then filled with enamel. The result is a beautiful mosaic-like effect, with each color separated by the metal wires.

Ferrero Ventimiglia's use of transparent enamel colors adds depth and dimension to each piece. The colors blend together seamlessly, creating a mesmerizing effect that draws the viewer's eye. The delicacy of the material and the precision required to apply it make each piece a true work of art.
