Gebrüder Thonet Vienna GmbH Presents New Designers' Collections

In occasion of Milan Design Week 2023, Gebrüder Thonet Vienna renewed their collaboration with India Mahdavi and presented new creations by AB Concept and Nichetto Studio. To express the company’s ancestral know-how the designers focused on the use of wood, highlighting GTV’s heritage and their commitment to exploring new design directions.

The story of Gebrüder Thonet Vienna begins in 1853, when Michael Thonet and his five sons founded their furniture manufacturing company, which would later become the most prosperous of the industrial era. Gebrüder Thonet Vienna GmbH (GTV) is today internationally recognized as one of the most relevant companies in the high-quality furniture scene, which follows the bentwood furniture tradition.

In occasion of Milan Design Week 2023, GTV renewed their collaboration with India Mahdavi and presented new creations by AB Concept and Nichetto Studio. Styled into a soft Nordic atmosphere, the new pieces harmoniously interpret the style of the company through the use of natural woods with enveloping shapes.

GTV renewed their collaboration with India Mahdavi, the Iranian French architect and designer that conceived the characteristic pieces born from the collaboration with the company. The eclectic style of the designer meets the Austrian brand’s emblematic curved lines, giving life to new dining and lounge chairs.

In response to the invitation of the historic company, India Mahdavi has extended the Loop family, which already included a lounge chair and a banquette presented in 2022, with a newly designed dining chair and a lounge chair, called Mickey for its characteristic “ears” that recall those of a mouse, a palpable echo to Mahdavi's ‘childhood heroes’. The Loop Lounge Chair was awarded with the prestigious Elle Deco International Design Award.

Inspired by GTV’s rich history and commitment to exploring new design trends, Ed Ng – founder of AB Concept – has created Hagu Chair. As embracing as a cocoon, the wooden chair represents a new exploration in the production and working of the material, evolving the concept of bent wood while integrating a brand-new material. Elegant, lightweight and comfortable the chair features a slim metal frame that gives the piece a fresh aesthetic value.

Nichetto Studio wanted to give attention to GTV’s steam bending technique applied on a new material: metal. The result is Ample, a chair characterized by a sinuous shape and matching the brand’s ideals of craftsmanship, tradition and innovation.
