These were the disastrous consequences of a massive zoning project initiated in the 1960s by the City of Taranto, which was supposed to provide the much hoped-for growth. Despite itself, Taranto has become an archetypal “shrinking city” just like the great American cities of the Rust Belt, which got off to a bad start in their post-industrial era.
