Meet Will Meyer and Gray Davis, founders of Meyer Davis multi-disciplinary design studio based in New York City and Los Angeles. Explore their welcoming, unfussy and modern interiors, realized working on multiple levels, weaving together bold design moves and striking handcrafted details.
Meyer Davis is a globally recognized New York City based design boutique specializing residential, hospitality, retail and workplace environments. This multi-disciplinary studio designs seamless physical experiences tailored to their client's individuality, combining principles of great design with a clear vision for the experience they seek to create. Strongly influenced by modern design, not only for aesthetics but also for the purposeful design it represents, Meyer and Davis have fostered a studio whose designers have their eye toward the future of luxury and an equal understanding of commercial and residential projects.
During their twenty-year experience, Will and Gray have deepened and shaped their signature style, realizing one-of-a-kind interiors, intercepting customer’s needs and designing welcoming and modern luxury environments, characterized by neutral tones and striking color splashes.
How would you describe your personal style and what’s the personal signature that makes your projects unique?
Our personal style is welcoming, refined, unfussy and modern. We began our work together as Meyer Davis by taking on the design of a new house in Tennessee and a nightclub in Las Vegas. So from the beginning, we have been equally dedicated to both residential and hospitality design, and our signature is in our ability to combine the best of both worlds on our projects. Clients want the attention to comfort and experience that is given on hospitality projects, and our hotel and restaurant clients want to be able to offer a sense of residential luxury and style. This trademark to how we design has evolved over the years and we like how each side of our practice informs the other.
Where do you draw inspiration for your projects?
We both deeply love to travel. That’s a big part of the why we work on projects all over the globe –it’s allowed us to see the world and an unending source of inspiration. We enjoy seeing how people live in different parts of the world, and getting a feel for what hospitality and comfort means to different cultures and ways of life. We both have certain spots that we like to return to, but we also enjoy being surprised and venturing off the beaten path. Great architecture and interiors is impactful no matter where you are, and we make a point to get out and see buildings and spaces that we admire or are curious about, both historical and contemporary.
What’s the decorative piece you enjoy the most selecting or styling for your clients and why?
Definitely bookcases. We pride ourselves on our collection of design books in our studio and are always adding to it. We love the feeling of a new book and find a lot of inspiration and joy from surrounding ourselves with books. So we like to share that enjoyment with our clients, whether by helping a residential client make space for books in their home and build a library, or by adding shelves to hotel and restaurant spaces to showcase an identity or sense of taste for guests. There’s no better home accessory than a great book.
What would be your dream project to work on?
We have always said that our dream project would be a yacht. Luckily, this year we were finally given the opportunity, and are just beginning on this.
Do you have an interior design master you look up to?
We have many people who we consider masters of design. We both look to our previous employers (John Saladinofor Gray and Charles Gwathmey for Will), as well as historical designers like Eileen Grayand Jean Michel Frank. We can’t give an answer without mentioning both Christian Liaigre and Francoix Catroux. We reference their worka lot to the designers in our studio, and consider them both to be benchmarks for beautiful design.
What epoque inspires you most in terms of aesthetic?
We are Modernists at heart. Recently we have been getting even more into early Modernism as an influence. Not only for the aesthetics, but for the purposeful design it represents. We’ve found ourselves returning to Bauhaus designers and feel that we can all learn a lot from them.
