BottegaNera Furniture

Furniture Maker - Lombardia, Italy

Founded in 2023 in Cantù—an historic hub of Italian furniture making—BottegaNera emerges from a legacy of bespoke craftsmanship. Conceived by Stefano Marelli as an evolution of his artistic path in painting and sculpture, the atelier creates one-of-a-kind furniture pieces that merge art and design. In collaboration with expert artisans and wood professionals, Marelli leads an ongoing exploration of materials, surfaces, and chromatic contrasts. Each creation reflects a dialogue between tradition and innovation, where craftsmanship meets experimentation. The result is a collection of sculptural, dreamlike objects—timeless works that blur the boundaries between functional design and poetic expression.

Handcrafted creations of custom-made furniture with a unique design

BottegaNera was born in 2023 in the heart of Brianza, stemming from a branch of a historic artisan company in Cantù, the Italian capital of artistic furniture. Founded by artist and designer Stefano Marelli, who graduated in painting from the Brera Academy and has been active since the 1990s between solo and group exhibitions, the company perfectly embodies the fusion of art and craftsmanship. Marelli has chosen to transform his 30 years of experience in the furniture world into a brand that relentlessly experiments with materials and surfaces, collaborating with clients and interior designers to create unique pieces of furniture that oscillate between painting and sculpture.

BottegaNera does not follow traditional patterns: its approach is a creative obsession with material, explored through mixed techniques and bold experimentation. This artisanal process allows for the birth of “dreamlike” pieces, as if dialoguing with environments from the distant past and destined for an unknown future. The link with the Brianza area is not only geographical: the culture of custom-made furniture and craftsmanship handed down through generations constitute the cultural fabric in which the company fits. This heritage is reinterpreted in a contemporary key, generating a bridge between local tradition and personal artistic vision.

Manual workmanship, allied to innovative techniques, is at the heart of production: each stage is meticulously attended to, from the selection of materials-wood, finishes, surfaces-to the experimentation with textures. The use of “special” materials emerges in the continuous research on resins, special paints, material treatments, to offer surfaces that evoke aesthetic and tactile sensations out of the ordinary.

Cantù, a city known throughout Italy and beyond as “the city of furniture,” was once a land of blacksmiths and farmers, and gradually became a workshop where wood craftsmen, architects and designers collaborated to renew the furniture industry. As early as the late 18th century they had sought refreshment here, citizens from families of the Milanese aristocracy and upper middle class, going so far as to build sumptuous villas. Their presence enlivened the local manufacturing fabric, renowned until then for ironworking, sparking flashes of technical ingenuity in “budding” artisans. Thanks to generational transitions of small workshops, in an area devoted mainly to agricultural activities, the premises for the development of one of the most vibrant sectors of Italian furniture have sprung up in little more than a century. It is from these premises, that in a handcrafted shed, with state-of-the-art machines, skilled hands of knowledgeable artisans achieve the goal of creating unique artifacts for refined and curious clientele. The story of a company that evolves thanks to its past made up of collaborations with distinguished masters of design, and looks to the future with new experiments and a constant search for materials and fine finishes. With the artistic training of its creator, Stefano Marelli, the process evolves, constantly experimenting with materials and surfaces.

Thanks to an artisanal know-how rooted in the territory and an experimental approach, BottegaNera interprets the Brianza artisan identity as a lively artistic workshop. The result is a brand that carries forward a vision based on uniqueness, the contamination of art and design, with a focus on quality and the cultural narrative that each piece of furniture conveys.
