Le Botteghe su Gologone

Textile Designer - Sardegna, Italy

In 2008, art collector and painter Giovanna Palimodde founded Le Botteghe Su Gologone, a unique workshop in the old stable of the Experience Hotel Su Gologone in Barbagia, land of art and culture of inner Sardinia. With the help of the extraordinary skills of weavers and artisans Franca, Tonina and Maria, Giovanna creates stunning works of art, notably handcrafted cushions, embroidered or painted bed runners, and fine ceramic tableware and glassware, completing the exclusive collections that celebrate the tradition and culture of Sardinia.

We transform tradition into creation, where authentic materials, master craftsmanship, and a contemporary vision shape a heritage to preserve and share

Born in Barbagia, the most authentic heart of Sardinia, Giovanna Palimodde draws endless inspiration from a land often described as a small continent for the richness of its cultural identities. It is a place at once wild and untamed, yet deeply imbued with art, history, and tradition—an environment that has profoundly shaped her creative vision.

Her artistic education was guided by painter Liliana Cano and architect and designer Giovanni Antonio Sulas, whose teachings continue to inform her work. In tribute to them, and to the great Sardinian artists of the twentieth century, Giovanna has dedicated rooms, interiors, and spaces that become living expressions of memory and homage.

Founded in 2008, Le Botteghe occupies what were once the estate's stables. Beyond its imposing gateway lies a world devoted to art, craftsmanship, and Sardinian culture. The original furnishings from the 1930s—the apothecary's shelving, the pasta maker's cabinet, the carpenter's workbench—have been carefully preserved, transforming the space into both a stage and a showcase for the work of blacksmiths, ceramicists, and master woodworkers.

At the heart of Le Botteghe are the skilled hands of artisans Franca, Tonina, and Maria, who work alongside Giovanna throughout every stage of the creative process. Together, they transform ideas, materials, and traditional techniques into one-of-a-kind handcrafted pieces.

Every creation begins with a thoughtful selection of materials deeply rooted in Sardinian identity—including wool, orbace (the island's traditional handwoven wool cloth), iron, and cork—alongside antique textiles and time-honored techniques. These elements give life to collections of embroidered cushions inspired by the embroidery tradition of Oliena, cushions recalling the island's traditional costumes, and pieces crafted from historic fabrics once used to preserve bread.

Giovanna's hand-painted cushion collection, Colores, embodies the meeting point between the Mediterranean landscape and ancient Sardinian symbolism, reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. Each cushion is individually hand-painted on carefully selected fabrics—including cotton, linen, and acrylic blends—transforming a furnishing accessory into a unique textile artwork.

Organic forms, references to the earth, the sun and the wind, together with ancient symbols drawn from Sardinia's cultural heritage, tell a story of memory, identity, and deep-rooted tradition. These motifs are distilled into an elegant, contemporary visual language capable of complementing sophisticated modern interiors. More than decorative objects, the Colores cushions become woven narratives that celebrate the enduring spirit of the island.

Ultimately, every aspect of Le Botteghe is dedicated to honoring the history, traditions, and culture of Sardinia, creating a place where past and present exist in dialogue, and where memory is transformed into creation.
