From Quarry to Masterpieces: Monitillo 1980's Marble Designs

In this interview with Monitillo 1980, the esteemed Puglian atelier founded over forty years ago by Francesco Monitillo, we explore how heritage and innovation converge in the art of marble. With craftsmanship passed down through generations and a contemporary vision shaped by advanced techniques, Monitillo 1980 transforms stone into works of timeless elegance: design statements that bring the marble’s story into the present.

Based in the Murge region of Apulia, Monitillo 1980 was founded by Francesco Monitillo over forty years ago, carving a space for itself in marble processing and production of luxury flooring and furnishings. Proud of its artisan heritage, the company is committed to traditional values, quality, and client needs. Now led by the founder's sons, it has embraced rapid growth by collaborating with international designers, integrating cutting-edge technologies into its manual processes, and researching novel designs, materials, and styles.

What inspires you most when working with marble?
Marble inspires us through its uniqueness, elegance, and innate prestige. Each block holds an unrepeatable story that translates into timeless beauty. Its artistic legacy — celebrated in the masterpieces of the past — is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for us. It guides our work as we create contemporary design pieces that honor and reinterpret the enduring value of this noble material.

How do you balance tradition and innovation in your creations?
Our approach is born from the encounter between artisanal tradition and technological progress. Hand-finishing techniques preserve authenticity and individuality, while advanced technologies — such as CNC cutting and robotic contouring — open the door to new design possibilities. We have transformed our father’s legacy, rooted in construction and a local market, into a forward-looking design vision — one constantly nourished by technological innovation and an openness to international horizons.

What technical challenges do you find most stimulating when working with marble?

Each day brings new challenges driven by our desire to offer clients exclusive, highly customized creations. We are inspired by the search for ever rarer marbles with distinctive veins and colors, and by the complexity of projects such as large tables carved from a single block of stone. These challenges fuel our creativity and strengthen our commitment to continually pushing the technical boundaries of the material.
