Winetage was born during an eno-tourist visit to an iconic wine cellar upon discovering that the barrels, essential for aging wine and made from the noblest and finest oak, are normally disposed of and burned after only 5-6 years. Inspired by Michelangelo's vision, Winetage reinterpreted wine-aged oak into modern furniture, revealing wine aging's alchemy. Each Winetage creation starts from respect and reevaluation of the material, the oak stave, in its 2 essential components: the curvature and the coloring imprinted by the wine during aging. Thus, the integration of elements such as marble, metals, and high-tech Green biological materials also plays a key role.
Winetage: we preserve and enhance the uniqueness of wine-aged oak by creating furniture to pass on that defines a new style of sustainable Italian design
Winetage was born during an eno-tourist visit to an iconic wine cellar upon discovering that the barrels, essential for aging wine and made from the noblest and finest oak, are normally disposed of and burned after only 5-6 years.
At that moment a memory of art history surfaced: Michelangelo and that fragile, poor-quality, unformed block of marble that no one else wanted to sculpt.
Michelangelo accepted the challenge instead. Because he saw within that "scrap" something that others did not yet see.
For centuries the world has known that "scrap" as the David.
Inspired by Michelangelo's teaching, Winetage saw beyond the current form of exhausted and disposable barrels.
Recovering and reinterpreting wine-aged oak, in fact, Winetage creates unique modern design furniture that reveals the alchemy of wine aging.
Indeed, the interaction between oak and wine, impossible to anticipate before the barrel is opened, creates an interplay of natural and unique colors and characteristics that become Winetage's signature design.
Enhancing and reinterpreting these unique elements, however, also requires innovation in the creative design process.
Unlike mainstream design, in fact, every Winetage creation starts from a respect and reevaluation of the material in its 2 essential components: the curvature and coloration imprinted by the wine during aging.
These attributes accompany and guide the designers' creativity at every stage of the process.
A non-trivial approach and not for everyone. This is why we scrupulously select designers and craftsmen who really know how to interpret the history of oak, to respect and enhance its curvature, color and distinctive features.
So the integration of elements such as marble, metals and high-tech Green biological materials also play a key role.
Above all, the marbles, Carrara (Tuscany) and Palissandro (Piedmont), sourced from processing waste and cores, are carefully selected and re-interpreted for Winetage by two stone artists with long family craft traditions.
The elegant and minimal style of Winetage creations tells of a natural and gentle design that allows one to truly "detach" from the professional environment.
The curvilinear language of Winetage creations, in fact, counterbalances the 90-degree angles, corners and straight lines prevalent in the architectural elements, furnishings and decorations prevalent in modern homes (elements that create a stylistic and emotional continuity with the work environment because of that sense of order, hierarchy and authority they provoke at the unconscious level, as demonstrated in many studies). The integration of Winetage's minimal, curvilinear design, therefore, results in a more harmonious, relaxing environment that encourages free movement throughout the space. The curved lines, in fact, bring a sense of tranquility, peace and comfort. Creating, finally, that necessary detachment, not only stylistic, from the professional environment, facilitating well-being and relaxation in the home.
