Function, form and beauty: these are the cornerstones of Kelly Hohla’s design philosophy. Discover her timeless projects ranging from contemporary eclectic mixes, to classic architecture with fresh updates, always with a focus on fine details and an artisanal approach.
Inspired, energetic and with a rare set of skills and experiences, Kelly Hohla opened her interior design studio in 2011. Inspired by travels and experiences, Kelly’s work starts from a deep understanding of client’s needs with the mission of bringing balance to his life and designing a home that reflects his personality.
Explore her interiors: featuring vintage influences with an eccentric touch, they are characterized by a focus on the sense of proportion and the relationship between space and light. Soothing and neutral colors like light blue, combined with shapes and palettes inspired by nature and the artisanal quality of materials, make every space elegant, with unmistakable style and personality, carefully curated to each individual client.
Where do you draw inspiration for your projects?
It always starts with the clients for us. We have a way that we do things, and certain materials that we gravitate towards- but listening to the clients and being able to pull out something out of them that makes the project have unique feel, is really where the work gets interesting- and inspires new finds and favorites for us as designers.
We love selecting lounge chairs. There are so many great options from vintage gems, to contemporary designs that have shapely, innovative, and unique forms. The options are endless, and we see it as a great way to bring personality to a room.
What is your favorite project you have worked on and why?
There was a project years ago in NYC. It was my 3rd time working with the clients, so I knew them well. Because a trust was built on both sides, and I knew that they wanted one-of-a-kind items that they would not see anywhere else, I was able to design a completely custom home for them with attention to every detail from custom upholstery & cabinetry, to an antique silver service collection, to bespoke light fixture designs, etc. Every detail was unique and considered, and the home is stunning because of this trust that they put in us.
In a hyper-digital world, do you often turn to social media and online mood boards for inspiration? If yes, which is the social media platform you use and why?
Absolutely. We love Pinterest and use it to save new favorite furniture & architectural ideas that we find. We also send Pinterest board links to clients with their orders by room, so that they have a visual record of what they are purchasing all in one place at their fingertips.
What would be your dream project to work on?
It seems that new opportunities that I had not considered continue to arise- so I am open. I will say that it is a dream of mine to work on a home that has a double story library, where we collect a mix of current books, and also have a section for antique books. Books add so much warmth to a space, and endless entertainment.
Do you have an interior design master that you look up to?
We are inspired by many midcentury furniture designers such as Adrianne Pearsall, Osvaldo Borsani, Pierre Pauline, Pierre Jeanneret, Edward Wormley, Franco Albini, Gio Ponti, Gabriella Crespi and Line Vautrin to name a few.
What epoque inspires you the most in terms of aesthetic?
Vintage 1940-1960’s French and Italian furniture designs are what I find most inspiring. In contrast, and going back further in time, I love the clean lines, proportion and symmetry of the Palladian era.
