Inspired by the Japanese art form of decorating with wood and plants, this one-off vase belongs to a collection of Ikebana pieces, that won Davies the first prize in the 2018 Ceramic/Ikebana competition in Austria. Handcrafted using the artist's own blend of high-temperature stoneware clays, the shape is created when still fresh, then fired in the kiln twice, the second firing at 1300°C in an oxygen-reduction atmosphere to remove impurities and create the distinctive natural earth texture with a cracked surface.
