Set within a late-Renaissance palazzo and a contrasting modernist building, The Hoxton, Florence presents a layered design narrative by AIME Studios that brings together historic grandeur, bold colour, and Italian craftsmanship. Across its interiors, guest rooms, and social spaces, the project carefully balances heritage and contemporary expression, creating an environment where Florentine history and modern design sensibilities coexist in a rich and thoughtfully curated dialogue.

In the heart of Florence’s historic centre, The Hoxton unfolds across two distinct architectural identities: a 16th-century late-Renaissance palazzo, complete with its original façade and vaulted arcade, and a 1980s building defined by a timber-slatted exterior and clean, linear geometry. The dialogue between past and present sets the tone for interiors conceived by AIME Studios, who carefully preserve the site’s heritage while infusing it with contemporary energy.

The palazzo reveals iconic Renaissance elements, such as lime-washed walls, original frescoes dating back to 1611, and an outdoor arcade embracing a central courtyard, layered with vibrant colours, bold patterns, and opulent finishes. Throughout the hotel, bespoke designs sit alongside expertly curated vintage pieces, celebrating Italian craftsmanship while maintaining a sense of relaxed, domestic comfort. The landscaped courtyard, animated by a striking fountain, acts as both connective heart and outdoor dining space, linking the two buildings.

Guest rooms mirror this duality. In the historic building, a modern reinterpretation of the Renaissance emerges through geometric references to classical Florentine architecture, softened by mid-century Italian influences. Tricolour marble hues drawn from the Duomo inform the palette, while details such as flamestitch motifs, seen on curtain edges and corridor carpets, nod to the Medici legacy. In contrast, the modernist building embraces the spirit of the Memphis Milano movement, where bold colours, clashing prints, and exotic materials define spaces animated by asymmetrical wardrobes and graphic lighting.

Alassio, the coastal-inspired restaurant, pairs vaulted ceilings and Murano chandeliers with Italian artwork, vintage posters, and mixed marbles, evoking the easy glamour of the Ligurian riviera. Enoteca Violetta offers a more intimate mood, centred around a dramatic six-metre bar, floor-to-ceiling wine cupboards, and original artworks, with the hidden La Riserva adding a further layer of atmospheric design below.
Together, these interiors form a cohesive yet contrasting vision: one that honours Florence’s architectural legacy while confidently embracing colour, pattern, and contemporary Italian design.
