Nelumbo Green DIatom

Daniel Cavey’s diatoms are a creative interpretation of the silica-encased, single-celled algae that are responsible for over 20% of the world’s oxygen. Diatoms are responsible for as much as 40% of primary marine productivity; these photosynthetic processes constitute the base of marine food webs and fix as much carbon annually as all of the world’s rainforests combined. Each piece is made by hand on the potter’s wheel, glazed, and then fired to stoneware temperatures.
